Instructor Training:
...supporting your employees' mental wellbeing, supporting your business, supporting you...
First Aid is the help given to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained. Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. In order to help people provide initial support for someone with a mental health problem, a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) 12 hour course has been developed.
The instructor training programme to deliver MHFA initially starts with a 7 day training broken into 3 blocks (2day MHFA 12 hour course, 3 development days, 2 assessment days) and all the supporting materials an instructor will need to deliver MHFA (set of presentation slides, instructor's kit and reference materials, MHFA manual, film clips, registration as an Instructor plus an annual update day).
The Eastern Development Centre developed a National Trainer to deliver Instructor courses, who also set up the first Regional Instructor Network. The Network meets quarterly to share good practices and concerns in delivering MHFA, to provide a buddy scheme for new instructors and to provide continual professional development training workshops and resources. The agenda is designed by the instructors themselves with the National trainer organizing the event.
The selection criteria for the instructor training are to answer the following statements:
• Understanding the words Mental Health
• What are the Benefits of delivering MHFA
• Your own experiences in Mental Health professionally/personally
• Your own experience of training
• Your own experience of networking with mental health services and community groups
• Your commitment of time to deliver MHFA
• Understanding practicalities of group working
• Key skills required to be an effective instructor
The cost of the instructor course is £1900 plus VAT per person. The 12 hour MHFA delivery is also an income generating course costing from £150 to £400 per participant depending on where the training is delivered by the instructor.
